Job Summary

Vector is looking for an experienced propulsion ground support engineer for our Arizona testing facilty (ATS). The position will be based at our test location in the metro Tucson, Arizona area, with a portion of time expected to be spent at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility also in Tucson.

This position will be expected to lead the design, installation, upgrade and maintenance of multiple pneumatic, hydraulic and cryogenic test stands and ancillary equipment in support of rocket engine and propulsion system testing. Responsibilities include generation of design documentation, operating and safety procedures, and training manuals. This is a hands-on position, and regular attendance and participation in installation and testing activities at the ATS is expected.

Essential Functions

  • Based on performance specifications established by Propulsion Engineering, develop functional schematics for propulsion ground support equipment (PGSE) that utilize a variety of propellants and pressurants in both liquid and gaseous states, including helium, nitrogen, oxygen, methane and propylene.
  • Perform fluid flow, pressurization and thermal management studies to ensure PGSE designs satisfy performance requirements related to propellant loading/unloading, pressurization, venting, conditioning, storage and consumption during test events.
  • Specify, select, design and/or modify principal components for use within the PGSE, including valves, regulators, reservoirs, fluid lines, tanks, gages, flow meters, etc.
  • Work with propulsion and facilities technicians to prepare test stands for installation and modification of PGSE; oversee and direct component installation, interconnections and functional tests.
  • Work with Test Engineering group to incorporate appropriate instrumentation, testing elements, parallel and redundant systems to enable calibration, troubleshooting, isolation and functional verification of critical elements within the PGSE.
  • Work with Systems and Test Engineering groups to develop, review and implement operating and safety procedures for propulsion systems under test at ATS; recommend changes to test cases, test configurations and readiness criteria to ensure safe and reliable operation
  • Support preparation of Test Readiness Review packages to internal and external customers
  • Work with internal and external resources to ensure test stand readiness to perform appropriate level of testing per program requirements
  • As necessary, serve as Test Operator or other critical role during execution of propulsion system tests
  • Maintain technical specifications, schematics and operating manuals for PGSE
  • Maintain and update all CAD models and drawings for PGSE; conduct design reviews with stakeholders, complete data package releases per workflows, and communicate changes to operators and technicians
  • Work through complex development objectives, divide them into manageable, clearly defined steps, and communicate them effectively to junior design staff.



  • B.S./M.S. in Aerospace/Mechanical/Industrial Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with industrial pressurization, fluid control and storage systems, preferably involving cryogenic and combustible fluids (liquid oxygen, nitrogen, propylene or propane)
  • Experience in designing, deploying and testing high-pressure pneumatic systems
  • Experience developing fire suppression and emergency gas venting systems
  • Experience developing, updating and maintaining detailed test plans and procedures
  • Experience with CAD (NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, etc) and Workflow systems (TeamCenter, etc)
  • Experience scheduling/prioritizing tasks from multiple demanding customers
  • Ability to troubleshoot both electrical, mechanical and software issues
  • Working knowledge of National Instruments data acquisition hardware and LabVIEW software
  • Working knowledge of sensors such as pressure transducers, load cells, flow meters, thermocouples and RTD's desired
  • Ability to interpret data, conduct anomaly investigations, and provide root cause and corrective actions
  • Experience with hands-on development and verification testing of prototype hardware
  • Experience in the development of liquid rocket engines a plus
  • Excellent verbal, written and graphical communications skills


Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: B.S. Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related education
  • Experience (Years): 3+ years' experience in industrial, automotive or aerospace
  • Experience (Technical): Planning, operation and maintenance of rocket propulsion test facilities
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, CAD, MS Visio, MS Project
  • Travel: less than 10%
  • Citizenship: U.S. Person
