Mechanical Design Engineer (Avionics Hardware)

The avionics group is responsible for all the electrical systems on the Vector-R launch vehicle. Within avionics, the hardware team handles the design, development, analysis, and testing of electrical hardware components such as printed circuit board enclosures, wire harnesses and connectors, and electrical test and checkout equipment.  


  • Provide engineering expertise in the design, development and testing of space-grade avionics hardware for the Vector-R launch vehicle

  • Work with other core engineering groups to develop integrated electronic enclosures and wire harnesses, including component and vendor selection, resource estimates and cost assessments

  • Take ownership of detailed mechanical design, 3D modelling, specifications, assembly drawings and other documentation for multiple avionics hardware components

  • Analyze and test designs to withstand the extreme thermal, loads, vibration and shock environments of space launch vehicles

  • Understand end use of the avionics components and provide feedback and design improvements for manufacturability and vehicle integration

  • Directly support evaluation, qualification, compliance/regulatory testing, and failure analysis of avionics hardware through production and test

  • Work with software platforms that manage product lifecycle and design requirements

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks, CATIA or NX (preferred) 
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing methods, fastener selection, electrical connectors and wire harnesses for aerospace applications or other high-reliability electrical systems

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Design experience in aerospace or space-related mechanical systems
  • Experience with electronic assembly design/testing/qualification techniques for thermal, EMI, reliability, and manufacturability requirements on aerospace applications or other high-reliability electrical systems

  • Experience designing and testing new hardware from concept through production not incremental changes to legacy systems

  • Experience with printed circuit board mechanical layout and ECAD software (Altium preferred)
    Experience with 3D CAD wire harness routing (NX preferred)

  • Experience with product lifecycle management and agile development platforms (Teamcenter and JIRA preferred)

  • Team player with excellent communication skills and attention to detail 

  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced and demanding start-up environment

  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry
